Printmaking

Screen Print:

Screen Print is the technique of creating a picture or pattern by forcing ink on to a surface through a screen of fine material. in my experiment I cut a paper stencil which was then placed on top of a piece of paper under a mesh screen, the ink was then applied on top of the screen and spreaded across evenly with pressure. By spreading the ink evenly with the same pressure it would be forced through the screen and would allow the stencil image to be transferred on the paper underneath.

Chine Collé:

Chine collé is a printmaking technique in which the image is transferred onto a surface that is bonded onto a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface in my case I printed on to tissue paper.

Lino Print:

Lino Print is a form of fine art printmaking where the printing plate is cut into lino, and then is inked  and placed with a piece of paper over it in to the printing press. The press is then ran to apply pressure which will help transfer the ink to the paper, creating and revealing a lino print as its final outcome.

Lino print artist:

Bill Fick

Fick has many titles behind him one including he is the director of Cockeyed Press, which specializes in a production of satirical linocut prints and book production, along with being the director of Super graphic Print Lab, which is dedicated to the promotion of print matter. He has had many experiences with the print making world and has developed his own style and interest throughout his career by adapting techniques he has learnt along the way. Bill’s lino prints are very intricate due to the amount of detail and time he must have put in to creating each piece. Each piece has its own characteristics that allow the prints to come to life, as by first glance the ink seems to look as though it is standing of the page, giving of a three-dimensional effect. Each cut is done with accuracy and extreme cautions as there is a lot of features and details gone into this piece that one wrong move could mess up the whole print. I personal like this piece and find it very interesting as it almost has a horrific yet comedy effect which plays on the overall image. Its making a mockery out of something that we are currently experiencing and turning it in to a humorous character, and by using lino print to create this piece its bring the horrific virus that we no to our attentions so we can’t block it out. Fick has a way of using lino print to grasp and portray unique topics so that the viewing audience can relate to it and understand it.

Least successful print.

Overall, I find this print as being the most successful out of all of my prints as both the red and black inks have contrasted well together to create a bold and dramatic finish which I feel works well in relation to the album cover section I have recreated. Each cut has been highlighted to an extent where the viewing audience is drawn in to the piece and can understand clearly what is being portrayed towards them. Although I altered the overall image with my own style on the print I do feel it was a success as the bold strong lines along with the colour choice brings the image to life giving it a whole new aspect that is intriguing and awesome.

Original image.

Overall, I feel the Chine Collé piece was the least successful print out of them all. I believe this was due to the colours in which I chose to ink my lino with and the colour of the tissue I chose to use. As I used black ink on my lino the light pink tissue was therefore lost in the background as the ink was to dark for the tissue to shine through. Therefore for future reference if I am to use the black ink again when creating a Chine Collé print I would have to then resort to a dark colour tissue in order for it to show in the end result. Same applies for the tissue if I choose a light coloured tissue to use then i would have to choose a light colour ink as well. Its all about matching the colours and seeing which ones compliment each other and in this print I didn't do that to a certain extent, the blue worked but the pink didn't.

Before Lino print.

Past Print Work.

Here is the work in which I have produced in the past using printing techniques, the main processes being Lino print and Screen print. However, in the past I used two types of screen printing techniques one was the normal screen print which used the screens as I did with in the workshop above and the other was called 'Easy Screen print. Easy screen print involved using an iron to stick the stencil to the paper so that I could the ink the image and peal away the stencil once it was dry to reveal the image behind.
