Sculpture

Maquette Room Space (Shaun Space)

What is a Maquette?

A maquette is model for a larger piece of sculpture, created in order to visualise how it might look and to work out approaches and materials for how it might be made.

Here is my Maquette/Shaun space created using foam boards that where cut using craft knife and stuck together using masking tape.

In side this room I added both objects in which I had in my possession along with sculptures in which I have created particularly for this project. Once adding these sculptures and/or object I then captured them in the environment as if they where initially placed in a room, to create the illusion that they are of huge scale but in reality aren't. They are small in size but appear to be bigger than what they are.

Below I have documented my work within the Maquette room/Shaun space.

These instalments where quick and easy to create as they where simple objects in which I had around my room. All I had to do was set them up in the space and capture them from different angles with different lighting. Over all, I personally find these instalments to be successful as they bring about an elegant and professional aspect to the final image as it is portrayed as being contained and not crazy.

This instillation was a little more delicate and time consuming compared to the previous one. I had to create this one by hand and to do so I used the left over foam board from my space to create a corner wall within it so that I could then sew through the walls with black thread to create the illusion of a web. I found it difficult to handle the thread with out snapping it as I am heavy handed with such fragile materials. However, once constructed I was very pleased with the final outcome and have found it very fascinating to lay eyes upon.

Marbles

Marbles

Play Video

For this marble installation I had to glue together some of the marbles in order to get them to stand up in the corner as I was having trouble trying to balance them on top of each other. Although I found it difficult staging the marble I do believe the final result was spectacular not only did it show colour, transparency, balance and skill but it also showed movement. By this installation showing movement it got me think about having a functional, active sculpture.

Hence the marble video, I wanted to see how well the marbles functioned by tilting the room and having them run/move towards the camera. How effective it really was well I'll leave that to you the viewer to decide.

These flower installations are all a single sculpture in which I created using blu tac. First I created the simple rose flower found at the beginning of this sequence then I altered the state by adding a face to the centre of the flower. Both states of the flower I captured with in the Marquette/Shaun space more documented images can be seen above on the accordion gallery. I found these piece intriguing to the eye due to the over all fact that such a simple material can create such beauty. Beauty in which allowed me to develop my document image further digitally, to edit the rose with a face to produce the final image in the sequence above, of which can also be seen on the page in my blog sub titled 'Digital' which show cases my digital work.

This instalment is created using toothpicks and a hot glue gun, this piece wasn't the easiest to create and was in fact very frustrating to put together however, once assembled  it gave of a magnificent end result that juxtaposes its self. I feel it is seen as a messy sculpture but is also seen as contained therefore contrasting with itself. Personally, I found this frustrating as every time the sculpture was knocked or moved toothpicks fell out of place, and it didn't help that I was heavy-handed when positioning this piece. After carefully sticking together toothpicks to construct my main segment of my sculpture and lots of patience I was happy enough to install it within my maquette, along with extra loose toothpicks to set the scene, so that I could document the final display.
